Chancellor Keon's Racist Comments at 2022 Fall Commencement (Click to Read)

Re: the statement made by Chancellor Keon at the graduation ceremony on December 10th.

Purdue Northwest has been continuously stating that they are a diverse, equitable, and inclusive campus, yet Chancellor Keon comfortably but mocked Asians at the December 10th, 2022 commencement. I implore you to think about Chancellor Keon's comment and understand the effect this will have on our diverse community at Purdue Northwest. We need chancellor Keon to resign for the sake of our university. As the leader of the PNW Respecting, Inclusion, Diversity and Equity Team, Chancellor Keon should have been aware of the hurt comments like this cause. Purdue Northwest faculty members passed a no-confidence vote of Chancellor Keon based on these comments and past issues with the university including negative feedback from faculty, issues over pay, hiring decisions the faculty senate has disagreed with, the high turnover in his provost's office, dissatisfaction with how he handled the merger of the Hammond and Westville campuses, and dissatisfaction among students with disabilities who feel they have not been properly accommodated. Purdue University's Board of Trustees has allowed Chancellor Keon to remain in his position despite the issues that plague Purdue University Northwest. I am asking you to sign this petition calling for his resignation for the safety of well-being of all students and faculty of Purdue University Northwest.

Please sign these two petitions to bring about change at Purdue University Northwest and let me know of other petitions.

  1. Alert : This meeting is for undergrads, but I suggest antiracists and allies show up in silent solidarity, holding up signs, passing flyers at the entrance. https://www.purdueexponent.org/campus/article_3398db6c-9530-11ed-8d00-b313ce1c4306.html :”President Mung Chiang announced Sunday night that a town hall for undergraduate students will be held on January 19 in the Mallett Theater at Pao Hall.
The event will go from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., and will give undergraduates an opportunity to have their voice heard by Chiang and newly appointed Provost Patrick Wolfe by sharing viewpoints or asking questions, according to an email sent to all undergraduate students by Chiang.
‘We look forward to learning from your perspectives, questions, and aspirations,’ the email reads.
Those attending the event will have the option to submit questions in advance.”

  2. A Poem to Memorialize Purdue’s Eternal Shame of Institutional Racism:

The Pale One at Purdue Northwest mocks a grieving family

Many Pale Ones flash white teeth in delight

Anguish in the hearts, pain in the soul of the grieving family

A Judas from the grieving family accepts silver coins in exchange for a smile instead of mockery from the Pale Ones

    The curtain falls

    Darkness comes

Now blood everywhere but silence from the Pale Ones at the Purdue home in the West

    Who to blame?

    This is not a game

    Who to blame?

    Search your heart

    Transform your soul

Now ask again: Who to blame?
